Midland, MI - November 02, 2006
Today, more than 600 middle and high school students from mid-Michigan are participating in the YES! Expo at Detroit’s Ford Field, with a little help from The Dow Chemical Company. The company is also distributing educational materials with interactive science experiments to all of the teachers attending the event.
The YES! Expo, which is sponsored by Michigan Technological University, will introduce approximately 18,000 to 20,000 Michigan students to technologically-oriented professions through dozens of displays and exhibits that showcase science, engineering and health careers. Participants include dozens of corporations, all of the state’s public universities, and a number of private colleges and other organizations focused on science and technology or student success.
Statistics indicate that the number of college-bound students interested in seeking science and engineering degrees in the United States has dropped dramatically in recent years. As a result, industry leaders say not enough skilled engineers, scientists and technicians will be available to meet demand.
"Dow has a keen interest in changing this trend, because we need to ensure our ability to recruit talented young people with science and engineering degrees in the long term," says Smallwood Holoman, manager of the Dow Promise Initiative. "We hope the YES! Expo, along with the educational materials we are providing to all of the teachers, will help attract more students to these important career areas."
